One thing I'd like to add is WiMAX is not a mesh-like network. So when you move from tower to tower, you do get disconnected. That was disappointing. Although single towers do have a pretty far range.

You can buy a mini-pcie adapter for your laptop. Intel has a model that has both 802.11n and WiMAX. Can be had for under $60.

Here's an Intel 5350 on eBay for $38.50 w/free shipping:

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-genuine-Intel-WiMAX-Wifi-5350-Wireless-MiNi-PCI_W0QQitemZ220436454605QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3353095ccd&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1234|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

I've never installed one of these, so YMMV, but I've had no issues upgrading laptops from 802.11g to 802.11n, and even replace an old dial up PCI card to an 802.11g card - I had to run my own antennae inside :P
