Docker HTTP proxy settings in Upstart

This was driving me crazy. There's some bug reports about it, but nobody has a plain and simple example. So here's mine. Enjoy. Old: New:

Setting up chrooted SFTP-only access on a Synology DiskStation

This has been on my list to try to figure out for a long time. I wanted SFTP only access to specific accounts, and to be able to chroot them. It took me a while and various…

Upstart script for Apache Solr

(Apologies for not sharing my technical thoughts for six months now!) I was trying to figure out the best way to launch Apache Solr on Ubuntu - and was having issues finding a…

Remapping remote keys for OpenELEC/XBMC

This past week, I set my Parents up with a Raspberry Pi-based OpenELEC unit, which I built for them to replace an extremely dated Buffalo product. (So far I have been pretty…

Shout out to CrashPlan!

While I am typically a BackBlaze fan boy ("we'll always be unlimited" and so cost-effective) I somehow stumbled upon CrashPlan. Which when looking at it and seeing it's a…

How I sped up my MySQL restores

I want to share this with the world, as it may have been helpful up front for me. I had to move a database that is 13gb on the filesystem (not including the shared ibdata file) -…

Mozy stops "unlimited" plan... and I mosey on

I've been a fan of Backblaze for a long time, and prefer it and recommend it over Mozy time and time again. Mozy was the golden child for a bit, but now the prize goes to…

True "Incognito" mode for Google chrome

I hate Windows. I do. This is a very hacky, no-garbage-collection, but still "working good enough" script. At the advice of #chromium on freenode, when asked about cookie sharing…

Pidoco - rapid prototyping/wireframing - why didn't I find this before?

A while ago, I was looking for tools to do prototyping/wireframing so I could explain my ideas a bit better than some crappy sketched out "wireframes" on paper. For some reason…

How to render Safari cookieless

Today we had an issue at work, an odd issue. OS X users using Safari wound up with a proxy issue after clicking on a button on our site, and reloading the page. The suspect seemed…

A simple Upstart recipe for KVM

Might not be the most advanced, but hey, it works. You just need to alter the mac address and the display for each machine. I'm running this on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) and it seems…

Chrome now supports SPNEGO!

As of Chrome 5, it appears that SPNEGO (that seamless sign-on that happens using Kerberos tickets and GSSAPI and all that magical crap) on a Windows-centric network is supported…

Really?

Google's usually pretty good about pushing standards and best practices but this is just lame. http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=41467 From my understanding, if…

The future of open source SQL databases (as I see it)

With the whole MySQL/Oracle issue going on, I find myself looking into the future and how I see it. As far as I'm concerned, MySQL will start to lose it's popularity as the…

How to easily keep your Ubuntu packages in sync

Thanks to Monty, I've learned something that will save me a lot of headache in the future. I had a bunch of random scripts I wrote myself to try to keep things in sync, turns out…

Who ever said open source software was perfect?

Typically, updates on the open source packages work without a hitch. However, my upgrade last weekend on my servers from Ubuntu Hardy to Intrepid wound up creating a couple major…

I hate wikis

I dislike wikis. At work we were using them. Now we're changing from wikis to an article management system. The idea on paper sounded great, but I'm realizing the pitfalls about…

Howto: liveupgrade on Solaris Nevada (SXCE, b98/b101/etc.)

One thing most places forget to mention, at least clearly, is the need to update the LU tools before you run the upgrade. This assumes you have the DVD .iso already on the system…

Wishlist: blog comment notification service

I comment on a lot of random sites and blogs. I usually write down the URL in a text file and hope that someday I'll remember to return to see if there's a reply. I believe a…

Windows never ceases to amaze...

I think I keep my machines pretty well up to date. I'm fixing up my girlfriend's computer right now, and I finally got all the updates applied except apparently one got missed…
